Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival | Tangueros Del Sur and Kidd Pivot

Tangueros Del Sur in the Ted Shawn Theatre

Another week at Jacob’s Pillow, and I’m kicking into stride.Photographing countless performances, exhibits and events at the Pillow is absolutely energizing – probably because the dancers have energy that is off the charts.

Tangueros Del Sur set the stage on fire with their passionate performance at the Ted Shawn Theatre. These Argentinean dancers are absolute experts in their style, and the live musicians who accompanied the group were just as virtuosic. Music from composers like Juan D’Arienzo and Astor Piazzolla accompanied the company’s exciting performance of Romper el Piso (Break the Floor), led by Artistic Director Natalia Hills.

Crystal Pite’s Kidd Pivot in the Doris Duke Theatre

I knew I was in for another treat this week from the Pillow’s mainstage artists. I was thrilled to work with Crystal Pite again this summer. Not only is her choreography pure genius – she won this year’s Jacob’s Pillow Dance Award – but she is a beautiful and gracious woman. Her company’s work onstage left a deep impression. Kidd Pivot‘s Dark Matters is astounding. The dancers are superhuman, the narrative spellbinding.

And Crystal was kind enough to let me capture her and her gorgeous family outside the reach of lights and set design. Stay tuned for a behind-the-scenes photo essay about Pite, her family and her company next week.

Out of the Rain: Jacob’s Pillow’s Inside/Out Stage Finally Sees a Performance

The weather finally worked in our favor on Inside/Out stage this week. Outdoor performances included Adam Barruch DanceMark Stuart Dance Theatre, UMASS, Joanna Kotze, Terra Firma Dance Theatre and the students of the Samba program at The School at Jacob’s Pillow.  The dancers all did the beautiful Berkshires justice.

ZOMG, this photo of Yannick is INCREDIBLE. Gah.

I also anxiously await the behind-the-scenes photo shoot.

[...] Last week I shared a batch of photos from Kidd Pivot‘s exceptional performances at Jacob’s Pillow’s Doris Duke Theatre. I remember photographing Kidd Pivot’s Lost Action at Jacob’s Pillow in 2009, and most of what comes to my mind when recalling that performance was how dark it was. Dark lighting. Dark backdrop. An opening with the dancers in dark hooded costumes. I remember struggling with the darkness trying to get a shot. [...]
