I’ve been welcomed in to observe the making of choreographer Andrea Miller and Gallim Dance‘s creation of their newest commissioned work “For Glenn Gould”. The world premiere is this week at Dance Theater Workshop. It’s my first time to have such private access to the making of a dance piece.
Being in the room with Andrea and the dancers as they make work was fascinating for so many reasons. Most amazing to me though is how the mind of a choreographer works. It’s a complete mystery to me. How do you turn an idea, a feeling, a concept into movement in the body and on the stage? How do you use verbal commands to instruct dancers to use their bodies in space to express emotion. Andrea is master. Even as I saw the piece coming together I couldn’t begin explain it. Perhaps that why dance creation is so exciting and so incredibly difficult.
Dance blogger Evan Namerow, Dancing Perfectly Free, and I are working on a story about it. Stay tuned for more photos and Evan’s story very soon.
Tickets are going fast for this week’s shared evening with Sidra Bell Dance. CLICK HERE to buy tickets now.
