Jessica & Eric | Natirar Mansion Wedding in New Jersey

In the past few years, I’ve learned that I seem to attract really wonderful couples. On the TV reality shows you see these brides acting dumb and crazy. Well, I have never met one. I don’t know where they come from. The people I work with are really in love, easygoing, wonderful, beautiful people. We have a great time and make great pictures.

Jessica & Eric’s wedding at Natirar in New Jersey was yet another reminder of how awesome my clients are. Not only was the venue a gigantic and beautiful mansion, not only were the flowers hugely abundant and absolutely amazing, but the bride and groom were so laid-back and delightful – exactly how a wedding day should be. They made their plans and then let everything flow, really focusing on having a great time spending the day with each other.

Eric is so obviously heart-struck, totally in love. He serenaded Jessica at the end of the reception, and it was so heartfelt and perfect for them. What a beautiful couple.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater at the Apollo

This week I photographed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s gala event at the Apollo Theater. As usual, the performance was impressive and a lot of fun to photograph. The Alvin Ailey company dancers performed excerpts of Home, Escapades and Revelations, Ailey campers performed Robert Battle’s The Hunt and students from the Ailey School also danced in a wonderful program.

Toni Braxton was a special guest, and wow is she beautiful. She was a real sweetheart, too, and posed for photos with all the dancers after the show.

Even with the glow of stars like Toni Braxton in attendance, it’s not really an important party until Bill Cunningham shows up. It’s really exciting when he arrives. Everyone starts taking his picture. I was excited for the chance to make an image of my own.

The reception was stunning again (last year, the company’s New York City Center opening season gala was gorgeous), and it made perfect sense to me when I found out they worked with designer David Monn on this event, too. Monn’s events are really something special. I mean, he’s great at what he does. Everything looked amazing, but a highlight for me was hanging from the ceiling—the largest disco ball I’ve ever seen in my life (the photo barely does it justice)!

My National Museum of Dance Photographic Exhibition Opens May 30

A few months ago, I received a phone call from the National Museum of Dance. The call was out of the blue, and after a brief introduction, they asked if I’d be interested in doing a year-long exhibition in their central gallery starting this May. All I could think was “Wow!” and when I asked them how they found my work, I was surprised to hear that they found me on Facebook.

I was only at the museum once before when my friend was getting married in Saratoga Springs in 2007. Walking through the exhibits and looking at all of the historical photographs, I found myself wondering if one day my own images might make an impact and hang in a museum to demonstrate the importance of a particular moment in dance history.

At first I couldn’t believe I had been asked to showcase my work at the museum…that I’m now included on the short-list of the museum’s previously exhibited dance photographers like Paul Kolnik, who has been shooting New York City Ballet forever; Lois Greenfield, who has photographed everyone and everyone recognizes her images; and Rose Eichenbaum, who has made such an impact with her photographs and books, not to mention the fact that she has worked with every important person in the dance world.

The museum was specifically interested in showcasing my photographs of dance performances at Inside/Out at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival. For me shooting at Inside/Out is very personal—it’s my favorite place to shoot dance, it’s what I find to be the most challenging space to shoot dance, and it’s the place that in a single image encapsulates the feeling you get when you’re on campus at Jacob’s Pillow. It’s so special to be exhibited at the National Museum of Dance and even more special to share these particular dance photographs.

One of the 15 images I chose to display in my National Museum of Dance exhibition

Curators at the National Museum of Dance were open to me using the space however I wished, and my immediate thought was to make a few large prints. I had never printed anything really large before—only once before had one of my images been printed on a grander scale—and the space was suitable to the scale I imagined would fit with the feeling you get watching dance at Inside/Out. Dancers on the stage at Inside/Out perform underneath trees that are 60-80 feet tall. These are huge trees, and yet they’re dwarfed by the sky and the surrounding atmosphere. It’s like dancing under the heavens.

The exhibition is titled:
Christopher Duggan at Inside/Out
in Celebration of Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival’s 80th Season

It’s wonderful that this photographic exhibition coincides with Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival’s 80th season. It’s the perfect tie-in.

Visit my page on the National Museum of Dance exhibit to find more about the gallery opening on May 30.

Maria & Rob | Pier Sixty The Lighthouse Wedding in New York

Wedding Ceremony at Guardian Angel Church

Maria and Rob were married at Guardian Angel Church in Chelsea. With a smile the priest reminded everyone that Maria graduated from the Guardian Angel School so it was special to be celebrating her wedding in the same church as she did her other sacraments. Maria had a very special “something borrowed” – her mother’s rosary wrapped in her bouquet and wore her “something blue” by choosing beautiful blue heels.

Celebrating the Vows They Made at The Lighthouse on the Hudson River

The bride and groom celebrated their wedding at a reception at The Lighthouse at Pier Sixty on the Hudson River. As always, The Lighthouse and Abigail Kirsch delivered with impeccable service and style and ended the evening with a flowing fountain of chocolate and parting gifts of homemade peach streusel.

Maria & Chris | Maritime Parc Wedding in Jersey City

Wedding Vows at St. Demetrios in Queens

Maria moved back to New York after eight years in Los Angeles, and soon after she came back to the city, she met Chris. These two lovebirds were so smitten with each other that they got married at City Hall last September. This past weekend, Maria & Chris renewed their vows in a ceremony at St. Demetrios Cathedral in Astoria, Queens. The Cathedral was gorgeous and Maria & Chris looked amazing.bride and groom

Portraits in the NYC’s Meatpacking District

After their wedding, we had planned to go to the meatpacking district to take some portraits, but because it was rainy and cold, I thought it might not be the best idea. Turns out the two of them were willing to brave the wet and the chill, so we headed to Little West 12th Street to make photographs on the cobblestone, with their rented Rolls Royce. I couldn’t believe what great sports they were – Maria was freezing but she still looks so beautiful!

Wedding Reception at Maritime Parc in Jersey City

Then we headed out for a reception at Maritime Parc in Jersey City. It was my first time photographing a wedding in the venue, and I had a wonderful time scoping out places to take portraits of the bride and groom. There was a stunning spiral staircase that made one of my favorite photographs of the happy couple.

Maritime Parc was gorgeous - and so were Maria & Chris

I met Maria & Chris through one of my all-time favorite wedding clients, and it was wonderful to see her, her husband and their beautiful nine month-old baby girl (in the gallery below) among the wedding guests.
